Texas Holdem Poker Stats: Showdown Chart

Posted by: Travis Johnston  /  Category: Strategy, Tools

So 8 post later we have all the knowledge we need to produce this chart, interesting 2 pair wins the most pots in Texas Holdem Poker over all.

Texas Holdem Poker Hand type win

Hand type win

Heads up is completely dominated by 1 – 2 pair hands, the 2 pair line is a little misleading as ~=30% of the time that 2 pair is created with 1 of the pair being on the board.  Only ~=20% of the time over all will someone have 2 pair using both of their hole cards.

In a full ring game it is a pretty even split what will be winning that hand, this is what makes full ring games challenging, your hand reading skill really need to be developed as it is about as likely someone has 2 pair as a flush.  Also you really have to be comfortable with thin value betting as most of the time you will be betting when it is quite likely someone could have a better hand than you.

Texas Holdem Poker Stats 9 Handed

Posted by: Travis Johnston  /  Category: Strategy

Some important stats from my poker simulator; 500,000 rounds of Texas Holdem ran 9 handed all the way to the river. This chart gives you a good idea of the frequency of each rank of hand coming up and its % chance to be winning at show down.

Texas Holdem hand types and their win rate at showdown
Hand type % of hands % of rounds won
High 17.3985 0.00068
Pair 43.8053 9.3979
Two Pair 23.5204 24.5645
Set 4.8355 16.711
Straight 4.62103 20.0571
Flush 3.02518 13.4608
Full House 2.60143 14.2833
Quads 0.16906 1.32382
Straight Flush 0.0211133 0.1791
Royal Flush 0.00244667 0.02176

The above stats are very interesting and should be memorized but they can be a little misleading.  For example only 13% of the hands are won by a flush, but that does not means if there is 3 flush cards on the board that only 13% of the time someone will have one.  A poker player really also wants to know that given that the condition for a flush is meet what is the chance that someone at the table has that hand.

Texas Holdem, % chance that someone has the hand when board supports it, 9 handed
Hand given the Condition % Hand
Set when pair on board 58.5993
Straight when three continuous on board 43.2499
Straight when four continuous on board 51.7196
Flush when three suited on board 73.4044
Flush when four suited on board 337.452
Full House when pair on board 25.2614
Full House when set on board 300.364
Full House when two pair on board 149.284
Quad when pair on board 0.960027
Quad when set on board 38.4517

Given the above example you can see that 9 handed if there is 3 suited cards on the board then it is not 13% chance that someone has a flush but a much higher 73%.

Hope these stats help you guys dominate the tables.

Poker players angling at the showdown

Posted by: Travis Johnston  /  Category: Cheats, Rants, Strategy

I have noticed a new trend in angling that is getting very annoying.  If player A bets on the river and gets called by Player B then player A is suppose to automatically turn over his cards and if player B can beat it he turns up his.  If Player B can not beat it he can just muck his hand and the game can move on quickly.

But for some reason everyone has forgotten the show part of showdown and no one wants to turn over their cards.  Instead what happens these days is Player A start questioning what player B has and try’s to determine if he has won the pot and needs to turn over his cards.

This has to stop for many reasons:

  • This questioning period is slow and wastes a huge amount of time which slows the game down which in turn pisses everyone off at the table.
  • If the angler does get a fish to turn over his hand and then he can beat it and turns over his better hand it is exactly like slow rolling which really pisses the fish off and drives them away.  Not good for the game…
  • It is breaking the rules and any time you allow even small breaks in the rules it just encourages people to go for bigger violations.  I have seen people start with this angle and then move onto announcing bigger hand than they have to see if people will throw away their hands away before they are forced to turn it over.

I can see why really aggressive players are trying to do this, they want to minimize how many hand they are turning over since they are playing so many it makes it a lot easier for people to get a read on how they play.

The dealer should handle this situation and force the Player A to turn over his hand immediately or muck it.  But sometimes you get a weak dealer that does not control the table like they should have you have to deal with it yourself.

Dealing with the showdown angler:

  • The right thing to do is silently just wait till Player A either turns over or mucks his hand.  You only have to do this once or twice and they will often give up and start turning over their hand right away.  The important part is to not say anything because as soon as you talk to them in any way they believe they have a chance and keep trying.
  • If that does not resolve it and the dealer does not take the hint to keep the action going then just call the floor man over and he will explain it to the dealer as it is costing the house in reduced rake.

Main point is this is a very bad trend for poker and everyone at the table should be making sure it does not happen.   If it goes on for to long the game will get out of control and encourage the angler to try it on the fish which will kill the game.
