Neither Phil Ivey or Chris Ferguson thought out the hand

I thought this hand was really interesting  as both pro’s seem to make a few mistakes and then the announcer’s take on the hand was way off.

  1. I like Phil Ivey’s call of Chris Ferguson’s under the gun raise, given how tight Chris plays there is a lot of flops he can catch to take this hand away later.
  2. I like Chris Ferguson’s bet on the flop, he most likely has the best hand and most people will assume he is c-betting and will call this bet no matter what.
  3. I like Phil Ivey’s smooth call in position on the flop, if Chris had a big pair then this smooth call will slow him down and he could most likely take it away on the turn.
  4. I really like Chris’s betting the turn, since everyone is floating the flop these days you almost have to fire 2 c-bets to take down any pot.  I really hope that is what he was thinking and not that he thought Phil Ivey was calling with a worse Ace.  Since there is no draws he is either up against a better hand or someone calling in position trying to set up a bluff.  I really disagree with the announcers saying he should have checked, that is not current poker.
  5. I think Phil Ivey makes a big mistake here just calling this bet on the turn, now is the time to re-raise and take it away.  Since Chris has so little money behind he can only call this bet to take it away on the river if he knows Chris will check on the river.  There is just no point waiting till the river to take it away in this case.  Chris has a hand or does not, there is very little draws he could be on, put in the re-raise on the turn when it will cost you less if your wrong.  What scare card was he hoping for on the river that would make his bluff more likely to work?
  6. On the river I agree with the announcers, Chris should have checked this hand and tried to let an aggressive player like Phil Ivey buff.  By betting when he was pot committed he is only going to get put all in when he is behind and people are going to fold almost any other time.  No pro like Phil Ivey is going to call him after he has fired 3 times with just top pair and a worse kicker.

You can see the pain on Phil’s face when he realizes he now has no way to win the pot.  Opps.
